Sts. Zosima and Sabbateus church
The construction of the church of S.S. Zossima and Savvati was begun in 1814 with the money donated by Stepan Koposov ( a St. Peterburg merchant born in Kargopol). It is said that the consecration of the church was timed to coincide with Alexander I’s visit to Kargopol in August 1819. The church is the last major construction in the town. It is another example of Russian classicism ( with a tint of provincialism ). Simple in form, the two-storeyed cubic constuction is crowned by a wide dome on a drum. Following the tradition the church was built in place of the wooden one. Today the church serves as an exhibition hall.
